What is it?
- Typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed.
- Short content videos are viewed prior to class.
- Time in class is devoted to activities, exercises, and discussions.
- The model draws on concepts such as:
- hybrid course design
- student engagement
- active learning
- There is no single model, the term is used to describe almost any structure that includes prerecorded media.
- Can include online quizzes or activities.
What are the advantages?
- Students can watch/listen, rewind, fast-forward as needed.
- Captions can be included.
- Repeated viewing can help students learning English.
- Devoting more class time to discussion and activities can give teachers opportunities to detect errors in thinking.
- Increase of in class collaboration activities and peer support.
- Can work well in support of BYOD models.
- Starts to move responsibility for learning to the student and away from the teacher.
What are the disadvantages?
- Requires planning time, preparation and development.
- Requires technology skills.
- Students need access to the Internet at home (viewing time can be provided in class).
- Students need equipment to access the online materials.
- Some students may require parent support to complete viewing activities.
